Once your Will has been properly signed and witnessed, there are two sensible steps you can take to help ensure it is kept safe and can be found easily when it is needed.
You may choose to deposit your original Will with HM Courts & Tribunals Service, also known as the Probate Registry safe custody service. This provides secure, government-backed storage for your Will.
Cost
A one-off fee of £23.
Why choose this option?
Your Will is stored securely by a trusted government service.
Reduces the risk of loss, damage, or misplacement.
You receive an official Certificate of Deposit as proof that your Will has been lodged.
After your death, your executors can obtain the Will directly from the Probate Registry to deal with probate.
How it works
Make sure your Will has been fully signed and correctly witnessed.
Complete the official PA7ENV safe custody label and include a cheque or postal order for £23, payable to HM Courts & Tribunals Service.
Place the Will and label in an inner envelope, then seal this inside an outer envelope.
Send it by recorded delivery to the address given in the HMCTS guidance, or deliver it in person by appointment at a Probate Registry.
HMCTS will process the application and return a Certificate of Deposit confirming storage.
You can also register your Will with The National Will Register. This does not involve storing the Will itself. Instead, it records that a Will exists and where it is kept. This step is usually done after your Will has been placed into secure storage.
Cost
£30, including VAT.
Why register your Will?
Helps ensure your Will can be located quickly and discreetly after your death.
Reduces delays if executors or family members are unsure where the original is stored.
Can identify whether a later Will exists, avoiding confusion or disputes.
How it works
Visit The National Will Register website or contact them directly.
Complete the registration form with your details, the date of the Will, and where the original is stored.
Pay the £30 registration fee.
You will receive a certificate of registration, which should be kept with your personal papers and shared with your executors if appropriate.
If you would like guidance on whether one or both of these options is right for you, we are happy to talk this through and help you decide.
